Westmeath’s Fittest Company 2015

So the dust has settled, some heads were sore the next day, the bodies surely were, but the minds were ALIVE!!

A great day of sporting competition was had by all in Columb Army Barracks, Mullingar on Saturday 25th April 2015 for the 2nd year of Westmeath’s Fittest Company. A grand total of 39 different company teams from Athlone to Castlepollard to Mullingar and Kinnegad lined out. Including subs, that's 236 individuals! Many outstanding athletic performances, lots of great team work, it really was a pleasure to watch and be part of.

After 12 weeks of training for Westmeath's Fittest Company 2015, the teams shaped up nicely! This year was wide open as to who would come away with the title.

The great thing was that not only had they been training to get physically fitter and healthier, but in so doing, they were all raising funds for The Cancer Support Sanctuary (LARCC) who proved to be the big winner on the day because you guys collectively have raised over €20,000 for this fantastic local charity!!!

A special mention has to go to The Tesco Kinnegad team and especially Monica Baker: This team raised an incredible €3,450 between them!! Well done and thank you guys.

A very close competition saw the Team, The Mergon Villians from Mergon International successfully defend the title they won in 2014. In second place was also a team from Mergon (The Mergon Maulers). Third place went to Trend Technology 1.

The competition itself included a 60 metre sprint, an aerobic fitness test (bleep test), a team obstacle race (which involved lifting and carrying), and a relay race. The ‘Westmeath’s Fittest Company 2014’ title holders from Mergon International, face some stiff competition from the likes of Ericcson, The Gardai Mullingar, Mr Crumb, Tesco, Dunnes, Ulster Bank, Westmeath Co Council, The Greville Arms Hotel, RBK Athlone, ORS Mullingar, Homecare Instead Senior Care, Flynn Fuels, Trend Technologies, American Medical Solutions, Bennett Construction, Athlone Extrusions, Whelehans Pharmacy, and indeed The Westmeath Examiner!

For the record; winners of the events were: Ladies Sprint: Ruth Daniels (Mergon Villains, Castlepollard), Mens Sprint: Dillan de Lange (Trend Technology 2, Mullingar), Ladies Bleep Test: Katie Devin (American Medical Systems, Athlone), Mens Bleep Test: Niall O'Brien, (Ulster Bank, Mullingar), Obstacle Race: Trend Technology 1, Relay Race: Mergon Villains.

The prize categories were; the overall winning team, the team that raises the most for LARCC, and the individual, male and female who raised the most.
Surrounding the main competition for the title of Westmeath’s Fittest Company 2015 there were food stalls, Mr Coffee, Rogans Smokehouse, Multyfarnham Cookery School, Kids Entertainment from Mrs Skittles. Kelly Photography were there to capture the highlights of the day along with Midlands 103 Roadcaster.

The event was kindly sponsored by Tri and Run, Maurice Looby Fitness, Kelly Photography, The Greville Arms Hotel, Athlone Extrusions & KC Sports.

The time and effort put into this competition by all of the teams was fantastic. We sincerely hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Looking forward to Westmeath's Fittest Company 2016 already!!

Congratulations and well done to each and every one of you.

Clifden Native, Olivia Cosgrove talks about her late start into distance running!!

It is often said that the Irish are the most generous when it comes to charity. I remember after Live Aid, Bob Geldof live on the TV news excitedly saying how "the Irish are actually beating the English in terms of donations per capita" to the famine stricken of Africa. We are an altruistic nation and it's great to see people giving to those who are not so advantaged. Many people do this in the name of sport and exercise, which is a double PLUS!!

Fail to plan, is plan to fail!! Why you need a plan & a coach.

For most people, running a marathon will be the most demanding physical experience of their life. For many people, building up to running a 5k will be a huge achievement that requires a lot of self discipline, perseverance, organisation, and PLANNING! Running is a great metaphor for life. You get out of it what you put into it.
